Week 9, Chapter 7: WIRELESS TECHNOLOGY & COMPUTER NETWORKS

Blog Questions

Explain the business benefits of using wireless technology.
The benefits make the business mobile, anytime access, cost effective, more customer service contact at a lower cots, less error, quicker response time and ensure less manual processes (such as those associated with restocking). Downsides include invasion of private time (e.g. employee 24/7 work related email access).

Describe the business benefits associated with VOIP
VOIP enables phone calls, faxes, voice mail, e-mail and Web conferences over digital networks. It saves money by running over the existing computer network therefore calls over the Internet do not attract telecommunications charges and customers can port their numbers between carriers. However, business still need to have at least one normal PSTN lines as VOIP is susceptible to power failure, viruses and other threats.

Compare LANs and WANs
Local area networks (LANs) connect computers that reside in a single geographic location on the premises of the company that operates the LAN.
Wide area networks (WANs) – connect computers at different geographic sites.

Describe RFID and how it can be used to help make a supply chain more effective.
These are tags that use radio waves to transmit data and are heavily used in Inventory tracking, they will eventually replace barcodes. These can make a supply chain more effective through the instant transmission of data. They can also be mass-produced at low cost.

What is one new emerging technology that could change a specific industry?
